Update: 2.1.2 has been released. This version includes bug fixes and some minor cleanup.

Complete Central Backup allows for backups to be made on the fly. There are some backup plugins out right now but sometimes they just get too clunky and are hard to follow. We designed this plugin for the normal user with a clean and simple dashboard to mesh with WordPress 3.8.


  • Schedule weekly, monthly or daily backups of your database or entire WordPress install.
  • Enable or disable backup notifications when a scheduled backup is ran.

With the 2.0.0 version there has been reports that the plugin will stall with a spinning wheel. Until this issue can be fixed we are provided known causes and solutions below.

  1. Wheel spinning but nothing is happening.
    We have found that if your server is using the PHP module fastCGI, it may be causing a 500 server error internally which causes the backup process to fail and the wheel continues to spin as if something is happening. Some servers may not honor the plugins request to for more memory and time to execute.Possible Solution:
    Add the following code to your themes .htaccess file<IfModule mod_fcgid.c>
    IdleTimeout 3600
    ProcessLifeTime 7200
    MaxProcessCount 64
    DefaultMaxClassProcessCount 8
    IPCConnectTimeout 300
    IPCCommTimeout 7200
    BusyTimeout 300
  2. When creating a backup, there is an error stating to fix server permissions and that a directory or file is not readable.
    In order for the Complete Central Backup to create a backup of a file, it must be readable by Complete Central Backup. If the plugin finds that it can not read a file, the script will shutdown. This is a safety feature.  Some users have reported a similar error while using cPanel. If you are using cPanel and you are receiving an error about the the “logs” directory, please ensure you have the latest version of Complete Central Backup. If you are using the latest version of Complete Central Backup and you are still receiving an error, please report it to or post here in the comments.

  • Hi. I urgently need some help – this is my first wordpress website so still very technically challenged. I need to move my wordpress from the adlab folder to the root so I need to do a backup first. I installed the plugin but I keep getting an error: The requested URL /wp-admin/options-general.php was not found on this server. What am I doing wrong??

      We have updated the plugin to support sub directory WordPress Installs. You can download it here on the blog or you can simple update through your backend of your WordPress admin panel.

    When moving WordPress you could simply just move all your wordpess file to the root directory. You mentioned that the current install in a directory called “adlab”. I am assuming it is a sub directory.

    For example:

    Has you moved the site already and now you are getting the error or are you trying to install our plugin on your current site before you move?

    If you are getting the error before you have moved the site then it is possibly a plugin issue that we will have the look into.

    I am glad you are looking to use our plugin to backup your database before you do anything but it is not necessary to create a database backup of your site.

  • How can I upload a backup that I downloaded? I had to wipe my wordpress installation so I re-installed complete backup but I can not find a way to upload. Do you have documentation somewhere?

    • We are working on getting the documentation up as soon as possible.
      If you have access to your files then you can place a backup file in /wp-contents/plugins/complete-central-backup/backups.
      Once you have put your backup file in that directory then you should see it in the list of backups.
      We have plans on adding a upload options to the plugin here shortly.

      I received a daily email with a backup file (zip-file) but now when I need to restore (as my website suddenly went wrong and I loose most of my stuff) I can’t figure out how to restore from this zip-file.
      Please help.

      • You must be mistaken. This plugin does not email any attachment. The newer version will however email backups.

      Thanks for the positive feedback. We believe that simple is best and with this plugin we have been receiving pretty good feedback based on the simplicity. If there is features that you would like to see in the plugin just shoot them over.

  • I just installed the plugin and it did a backup without a hitch. Now I need to look into exactly what “complete” backup includes. No problems installing it the first time.

    • “Complete” is representing the full version which has not been released yet. There is a number of features that are including in the full version that makes this plugin “complete”

    there appears to be an issue in the coding. I click the backup, but nothing happens…until i chmod 777 the backup directory. then stuff appears to run but I cannot download or delete backups. there is a file listing “/home/httpd/vhosts/ ” at the top that shows two // in front of the location of the log file (which does not populate?

    • We have suspected that this was going to be an issue. Not all servers are setup the same. There is nothing wrong with the code other than it does not stop even if the ownership of files or directories are not correct.

      Most of the time this can be fixed by changing the ownership of the root install of WordPress to the correct owner.

      For example any of wordpress was installed using a owner higher (Most of the time root), there is permission issue’s when trying to write files using the normal user (which the code runs under). manually setting files to 0777 is the only way around it if your ownership is not correct.

      The reason I am certain this is case is this happens on one of our test environments which was set up wrong on purpose. Wrong ownership does not always show its face until it comes to the script itself trying to do something on behalf of the user.

      If you are able to SSH then you can check by going into your WordPress root and using the command ls -al. This will list the owners of the files. If this owner is “root” or the name of the user your hosting account is setup as then the ownership of your WordPress install is not using the right user

      We have implanted a chmod script in the latest plugin to try to fight this issue but if it is not working then the script does not have any other right than to read your files.

      We would implant a “sudo” command to simply over power the server settings but this opens the door to exploits which we will not tolerate in this plugin.

    I loaded Complete Backup on two of my wp sites. One it works fine. On the second it seems to work correctly except that the backup files do not show under the backup manager window. They do show up in the log and in the /wp-contents/plugins/complete-central-backup/backups directory. I am wondering if I can trust that it is working? Regardless, thanks for a simple solution.

    • It looks like the checks are not working properly in the latest version. Even though it is saying it was good, it has failed the backup. The for sure thing to check if the backup manager. It is a live representation of what your backups are.

      Please check you folder permissions and or the ownership of your WordPress install. Since every server is different, it is almost impossible to help out with this problem. The next version has a patch for this error and also a check system to inform a user which directory is mis-configured

    • Hey Dave,

      The plugin was not built for multi site at all, although I think it would work as a network administrator plugin. The plugin is built to take the whole database and back it up. So for networking admin, I would say it works but per site on a multi site install, it would lead to some serious issue’s. I am going to look into this tonight and see what I can do for the multi site installs.

    I just installed your backup plugin, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. When I force a new backup, Internet Explorer thinks about it for a minute (the progress bar) and then it kicks back to the WordPress Settings main page. I go to the backups page, but there are no backups there.

      More than likely it is a directory permission issue. This is something we can not really plan for since there is a million ways tat a server can be setup. We try to ove ride this already in the code but it seems that sometimes PHP does not have the rights to change permissions of the directories and in result it will fail.

      We are try to add a feature in the next release that will report all permission issues before it even lets you try to do a backup.

  • I backed up the site, and it tells me backup completed. But there is no name, or directory or any other evidence that the backup actually exists somewhere.

    • This is a server permission error. PHP and or Apache does not have the rights to create the directory. This needs to be fixed before the plugin will work correctly.. This is a known bug with the plugin. It seems like the plugin checks fail and still pass a good check for some reason.. This will be covered in the next release

    Where can I set that the file system is backed up?
    It is only backed up the database – which is not enough for me unfortunately!

    • The plugin does nto currently fully support backing up the file structure yet. The class it there but not fully tested. This will be in the next release.

    • The plugin can currently update all the files as well but it does not support restoring from a file backup yet. We have this turned off by default but we will work to get the plugin updated and the full backup added in the next version

    Great plugin! Only one problem.

    Weekly backup does not work. I have installed the plugin on 4 sites and none work. I have to manually do backups. Auto backup is why I liked the plugin so…

      I would check to make sure your server supports cron jobs. The plugin uses the default WordPress cron settings. If it is not working then your server would be the first place I would look..

      We would be interested in your findings, if you could report back and let us know if the cron jobs was the issue.

      Please refer to the plugin documentation. If you are not seeing the plugin under the “Settings” link label “Backup” please make sure the plugin is enabled.

  • When trying to download the backup, I am getting an error that reads, “Forbidden. You don’t have permission to access /wp-content/plugins/complete-central-backup/lib/download.php on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

    Any suggestions?

    • It could be a bug in the plugin. The plugin has limited support as of now but we are working to find time to update and improve.

    Automatic weekly backups still not working. When will this issue be addressed?

    • This issue will be address when WordPress themselves make sure cron jobs are working. The next plugin version will completely change and will have off site triggering. More than likely you are using shared hosting and PHP does not have rights to create cron jobs. It is not the plugin, it is the environment is is being hosted on.

      The plugin only does database backups as of now. It can do a full restore of database only. The new version will allow for full site backups.

I have had no problems with this plugin and appreciate its ease of use and functionality. Thanks for a great product that gives me peace of mind in the event my website is compromised!


    I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT!!! I just installed the backup-plugin, I created a new Backup and after restoring from the Backup 2 hours later, EVERY page, EVERY post-entry – my whole content is gone now!!! The theme, the plugins – everything is there, but my whole content is deleted and I have to go online with the website next week, I worked on it for months! How can that be, I have no idea, what to do now??!!

  • I just want to say a quick thanks! I love how simple the plugin is & it completely saved my life. Recently I had to change servers with my site. I had multiple backups of things but when I re-installed them, somehow little things did not reappear. When I did a “restore” with your plugin – voila! Everything is back to normal.

    Great plugin, but I have to ask: Why only allow it to backup weekly? Why not let the user chose the backup frequency and the amount of backups that the system will keep before they’re deleted?

    • The plugin Cron job is dependent of the built in cron jobs for WordPress. Most of the time this feature does not work due to server limitations on share hosting. We plan on upgrading this feature to use a custom built trigger from our servers. This will allow for backups to happen on any server. We will also be adding additional backup settings

  • I am trying to issue a forced backup, but each time I click on the link, the backup page disappears. When I click the Force Backup link again, the page reappears – but no backup. Any suggestions?

      More than likely the plugin is not able create a backup file due to server permissions not being correct or too strict. What version of WordPress are you using?

  • I’ve been using this plugin for a while now. What’s missing for me, is a simple restore button. Restore from backup. Restore from file on computer…. etc…

      Thanks for the idea’s. The plugin does have the ability to restore from a backup that was backed up by the plugin. Within the next few months we will be updating the Backup plugin with more features and better support. Restoring full backups with FTP offsite storage as well advance backup settings and options.

    I just installed but see no section to configure with server details, where to save, what to save, etc.

    I have a jumble of little sections and I can see some text in the background, behind the sections. I can’t close any of those to see in back. Can you give me the URLs of the missing “stuff” so I can try this?

    I tried other backup scripts. One had backdoors. Another used up so much server memory it never completed (260mb db).

    Yours is highly recommended. If only I could configure… :)

    • Pam,

      The plugin is pretty straight forward when it comes to backing up your site. There is not configuration needed as it uses the WordPress backend to connect. You should be able to simply click the backup button and a backup should be generated. if there is an error while backing up, please check your server permissions as WordPress may not have rights to create files on your server.

  • I have a rather large WP site (about 10G total). My server file size limit is 2GB (per file). Can I use this plugin to backup my site and split the backup into smaller 1G files? Thanks!

    • Thanks for showing interests. The plugin has not been tested on a site the size. Currently the plugin does not support splitting up the backups.

    just installed this plug-in and created a back-up then went to restore that back-up and now I get an error on the site.
    Internal Server Error

    The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

    Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

    More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

    Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

      You have to work with your hosting company on this matter. This seems to be a compatibility issue with your server settings.

    Using the plugin on two of my websites and very happy with it. Together with the standard export on wordpress a great way to ensure the entire website content. You asked (in the plugin) to give remarks about it. I have just one. Could you guys change the date of the backup to date and time? Cause if you’re making a website and several backups on one day, it’s hard to pick the last one. So a time of the backup would be helpful.

    Other then that. Great plugin and thanks for all the work you guys do.

      Thanks for the suggestion. You are absolutely correct and we think that time labeling for backups could use some love. We have been a bit busy around here but we do plan on pushing a update here shortly. Your suggestion would be a good improvement.

    • Thanks for the positive feedback! We have plans on overhauling the plugin but we have not yet been able to yet. We do have plans it the mix so hopefully sometime within the next couple months we should have something worth while. Check back from time to time for any updates.


  • I’ve installed your plugin on multiple client websites – it’s so great to be able to make backups easy for them. After all, it’s not something most new bloggers are prone to do, usually it waits til they’ve had a bad experience!! Thanks for all your work.

    I have a problem though. I have NEVER been able to make the weekly backup feature work, on any of the websites. Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot that? It’s not a paid-only feature is it?

    • Glad to hear you are putting the plugin to good use. The plugin uses wp_cron as a hook for the automatic tasks. The automated backup feature piggy backs on WordPress cron tasks which seem to have a problem in its self. There is plans to address this issue. Check back from time to time for an update. Not sure when we will get to it, but we will indeed tackle the issue.

  • I receive this error when trying to backup – Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home4/cafirst/public_html/wp-content/plugins/complete-central-backup/lib/classes/backup.php on line 57

    Please advise on a solution.


    • Rebecca,

      This error is mainly due to server configurations put in place by your hosting company. The plugin tries to override this setting but in some cases the plugin does not have the permission to increase the maximum execution time.

      You can contact your hosting provider and ask them to increase your execution time to the highest they feel is allowed.

      This error occurs when you have a very large database and the backup plugin was unable to complete the backup due to being cut off short by the server settings.

    I tried to restore using bigdump and never had a problem with bigdump. It is having an issue with this line

    • Matthew,

      Have you tried using phpMyAdmin to import the data?

      MyISAM is no longer the default engine for MySQL, so if you did a server move or upgrade and re-installed WP, that may be the source of the issue. Just a guess, but based on my experience.

    Just did an in-place upgrade to Central Backup. Decided to test the new ‘Download’ Option.

    Notification appears to work (although it’s ambiguous)

    Maybe that should be ‘has run’? or should we be getting a link to a log or something?

    I also tried the ‘Full’ option, and I wanted to extract the file, so I could take a look-see (particularly since the ‘Database’ backup reported the exact same size). That was how I wound up using the new ‘Download’ option.

    I thought you would want to know.

      The new version is a bit different. Thanks for pointing out your findings. We will be making pushing an update sometime later this week that will hopefully fix the issues you mentioned.

    Note the ‘//’ after ‘complete-central-backup’

    BUT – that is not the issue, removing it obtains the same ‘No hook found’

    A. I’m not suite sure what happened, but I seem to have ‘lost’ the backups made by the prior version? Which is odd.

    B. I located the zip files and both the backups I got originally (with 2.0.0) were ‘full’. When I ran a fresh ‘Database’ only I did get a .zip with only the .sql file.

      A. The upgrade notice states that any old backups will be wiped out and manually backups should be made. Sorry for the confusion.

      B. I am personally looking into the issues with the downloader. This may be a permission issue but not to sure at this time.

  • I think what Joe is referring to is the latest update to Version 2.0.0.

    Since updating nothing happens, it just times out. Whereas in the previous version it made backups quite quickly.

    Not to mention the weekly backups feature never worked in the first place.

    I don’t know if this plugin is working or not either. Confused. How long should a database backup take? We are talking less than 300 posts here and 35 pages…


    • If you are able to provide some information regarding your setup, it may help out making the pugin better.

      – What browser and version are you using?
      – What version of WordPress are you using?
      – Who is your web hosting company?
      – Are there any errors in the console using “inspector”, “firebug” or “Developer tools”?

      The New plugin is built for modern browsers thus there is some known issues with Internet Explorer users. Other known issues are web hosts that do not provided proper permissions. Any help would be great.

    Hi Justin , thanks for the quick responses (and update!).

    I just applied the update in-line, and then visited the plugin.

    A. The new version’s scheduled backup seems to be working just fine, I had a couple new backups sitting there. (I chose daily, full as I am working on modifying things.)

    B. I ran a new full backup manually and then DL’ed it and extracted it. Very nice. I’m going to see if I can use it to ‘transplant’ this install to my live beta to my ‘ready-spare’ server. :)

    My environment (for this install)is WP 3.8.1, Apache 2.2.21, MySQL 5.5.16, PHP 5.3.8 on GNU/Linux kernel 2.6.8

    I see the backup uses the Linux timestamp. Out of curiosity, what does it use on Windows Servers? (I have WP installs on those as well)

    • Jon,

      You bring up something that I think we overlooked. Time() on windows defaults to the environment setup format. In some cases this will result in something like “1PM” instead of a timestamp. We will have to replace time() with MySQL time and possibly MD5 hashes. I will investigate a bit more before making a decision. None the less I am going to add this as a todo for the next minor release.

      In the upcoming major release, we will be adding a migration tool which may help ease your “transplant”. Please let us know how your migration goes as this will help better the plugin overall.

    HI there, I used your plugin to backup my sql, I have moved my hosting package on 1and1, so I have a new database name, database user etc

    I’m assuming it will break if I click restore as the original backup will have stored the old database details.

    is there a way to restore this without breaking my website

    I’ve just upgraded to v.2.0.21. on this site. I’m getting an error:

    Fatal error: Class ‘ZipArchive’ not found in /home/highimpa/public_html/staging/work/wp-content/plugins/complete-central-backup/components/backup.php on line 192

    and the backups say “In Progress” for status but do not finish.

    The new version works fine on other sites where I upgraded it.

  • Sorry about the delay in response.

    The SQL file is just the database. As long as you are not changing the domain name you should be fine just importing the SQL file into something like phpMyAdmin.

    If you have a full backup of you site you simply upload the backup files to your new server via FTP, import your SQL file with phpMyAdmin and make changes to wp-config.php.

    • Paul,
      You may be thinking of another plugin. Currently Complete Central Backup does not support Dropbox storage. You can your backups in the “wpbu-backups” directory located in the uploads directory of your site. You should also see the backups in the overview tab. You can download them from th there as well.

    I am bulding my first website on wordpress and i am trying to get a backup but the backup zip file is always empty. And when i try to open it the zip file ask for a password. I don’t know how to fix it.

    • The plugin will does not require a password at all. Please ensure that you have all require modules for your server installed as well as proper files and directory permissions. Permissions are a big issue since most all hosting services have their own way of getting in your way.. ;)

  • When running database back up only, getting an error: stats/logs is not readable. Please fix the file or directory permision.

    Never seen this error before on any of my other sites, and can’t seem to find this particular folder. Please advise full path and how to correct.

  • Hi, I’m getting trouble when I try to make a full backup on my website (no problem with the database backup). Like Jon (on March 19, 2014), the backups say “In Progress” for status but do not finish.
    How can I fix it ?

    Warning: Wrong parameter count for stristr() in /homepages/XX/dXXXXXXX/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/complete-central-backup/lib/wpbu-functions.php on line 540


    Warning: opendir(/homepages/28/dXXXXXX/htdocs/app403672155/.metadata/) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied in /homepages/28/dXXXXXXXX/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/complete-central-backup/components/backup.php on line 404
    logs/traffic.html/.md5sums is not readable. Please fix the file or directory permision.

    Any ideas on how to fix this?

    • It looks like your server has your hosting on a strict lockdown. This is common for hosting that uses cPanel. There is a feature in the plugin for “Error Tracking” in the top right of all plugin windows. Please turn this to “Allow”. By doing so, the plugin will send internal errors to our analytic server. This gives us a geek view of any issues the plugin may be having.

      Possible Solutions
      – Ensure you are using the latest version of the plugin. The latest version of the plugin does fix some of the errors like this.
      – Disable any security plugins you have have installed and try again. Once a Backup is made, re enable.
      – Manually update the file and directory permissions to 755.

    I am having problems restoring my database.

    I have tried to import the SQL file, but I get the following error message:


    There is a chance that you may have found a bug in the SQL parser. Please examine your query closely, and check that the quotes are correct and not mis-matched. Other possible failure causes may be that you are uploading a file with binary outside of a quoted text area. You can also try your query on the MySQL command line interface.     Unfortunately I have very limited technical knowledge, so I don’t really know where to start. I assumed the error would be somewhere near the character 6 contained within line one. I have opened the SQL file in Notepad, and there isn’t a 6 on line 1 that I can see….

    Any help gratefully appreciated.
